At least 10 people have died, including seven women, in a stampede during the ‘Astami snan’, the Hindu holy bath in the Old Brahmaputra River, at Langalbandh, Narayanganj.
All the victims are aged over 50, said Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Md Jakaria, adding that the authorities were asking the devotees no to throng the site of the accident. Langalbandh, a Hindu holy place, is situated on the bank of the Old Brahmaputra close to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and about 20 km to the southeast of Dhaka city.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday expressed deep shock at the deaths of 10 people in a stampede on the bank of Old Brahmaputra River at Langalbandh, Narayanganj on Friday morning. In a condolence message, the Prime Minister prayed for salivation of the departed souls and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
