The bodies of a man and his two children have been recovered from Chalan Beel in Sirajganj, a day after they went missing, police say. Altaf Hossain, 35, his daughter Anika Farzana, 9, and son Nafiur Hasan, 7, did not return after going fishing in the swamp on Monday, relatives say, agencies report. Hossain taught at a local madrasa in Tarash Upazila that was shut down recently.
Police say none of the three victims knew how to swim. Motahar Hossain, Raiganj Circle’s assistant superintendent of police, said locals informed them of sighting the bodies in the Beel’s Nadousyedpur Mashindaparha on Tuesday. Their fishing net was found on Monday night. Local spotted Farzana’s body in the morning under a bridge.
Bodies of her father and brother were located not far from hers. “Parts of Chalan Beel are deep and none of the children knew how to swim,” ASP Hossain said. “We suspect the man drowned while trying to save his children after they had fallen into water.”
