Two suspected criminals were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Telki Gayra area of Madhupur upazila early Sunday, UNB reports. The deceased could not be identified immediately.
Ashok Kumar, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch of police, said police on information that militants might attack a church in the area set up checkpoints at various places.
Two young men were passing through the area near the church riding a motorbike and as their movement appeared to be suspicious, police asked them to stop. The motorbike riders then opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
The gunfight left the two on the motorcycle injured. They were rushed to Madhupur Health Complex where doctors declared them dead. A police constable, Bijan Sikder of Madhupur Police Station, was also injured.
Police also seized the motorcycle and recovered a revolver with three rounds of bullet and two machetes.
