2 killed in police ‘encounter’

Two people were killed in separate alleged gunfights with police in two districts on Tuesday, reports UNB.

A suspected member of an outlawed party was killed in an alleged gunfight between his cohorts and detectives at Jakura Balurghat in sadar upazila in Rajbari early Tuesday.

The deceased is Saidul, 32, local commander of Maoist Bolshevik Reorganisation Movement (MBRM).

Rajbari police superintendent Asma Siddiqa Mili in a press briefing said tipped-off the law enforcers conducted a drive when the outlaws were holding a clandestine meeting at Jakura Balurghat area around 2:30 am.

Sensing presence of police, the outlaws fired gunshot on them forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, she said.

At one stage, Saidul, one of the outlaws, sustained bullet wounds while his cohorts fled the scene. Later, police rescued Saidul from the spot and took him to hospital where physicians declared him dead.

Police also recovered a foreign gun, 32 rounds of bullet and 23 cartridges from the spot.

In another incident, a suspected mugger was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police in Bypass Rail Gate area of Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria early Tuesday. The deceased is Khokon Sutradhar, 30, reports UNB.

Khokon was arrested along with Tk 1.87 million looted from a private company representative on Monday afternoon, said Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Akhaura police station.

A team of police along with him conducted a drive in the bypass rail gate area around 3:00am to arrest his accomplices.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the hoodlums opened fire on police prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

Khokon was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while his cohorts managed to flee the scene. He was taken to Akhaura Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared him dead.

Khokon was also wanted in several cases, including that of mugging, the OC claimed.

The law enforcement’s version of the events was, however, not verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim’s family.
