4 hurt in wall collapse during quake in Sylhet

The injured are Sajidul Islam, Faridul Islam Farid, Shilpi Begum and Rokshana Akhtar. They are undergoing treatment at Sylhet’s Osmani Medical College and Hospital.   At least 32 others were injured in the city when they tried to rush out of their houses in panic during the tremor.

Enamul Habib, Chief Executive Officer of Sylhet City Corporation, told bdnews24.com that the wall of the 8th floor of the under construction building had collapsed on the tin-shed house, leaving its occupants injured.    Two rooms of the house were also damaged, he said.

Stating that the mishap occurred as proper safety measures had not been taken during the construction of the building, Enamul Habib said action would be taken against the market authorities.

In the opinion of the house owner, Faridul Islam Farid, the mishap occurred because the market authorities had not paid any attention to safety measures despite repeated reminders.

At least nine people were killed, including three in Bangladesh, and nearly 200 injured in the quake that rocked eastern parts of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar.   The epicentre of Monday morning’s earthquake was India’s northeastern state of Manipur, where six people died and over 100 were injured.
