BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday said some 4,200 BNP activists were detained so far across the country before and after the verdict of Khaleda Zia, Agencies report.
“Some 4,200 BNP activists were arrested so far centring on the verdict of a false case against Khaleda Zia,” Rizvi told a press conference at the partys Naya Paltan headquarters.
Rizvi said some 115 BNP leaders and activists have been detained by the law enforcers on Saturday during their 2-day protest programme against Khaledas conviction.
BNP had announced 2-day protest programme for Friday and Saturday after a makeshift court in Dhaka sentenced Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to five years in jail on Thursday.
Rizvi said police have detained at least 40 activists from a BNP procession in the capital Saturday. Police also charged batons on the BNP procession. Over 50 BNP activists have been injured in police action, he alleged.
According to BNP, some 13 BNP men arrested in Narayanganj, including district unit general secretary, 16 each in Natore and Narail, ten in Comilla, five in Netrakona, and 3 in Gaibandha.
Rizvi alleged RAB and police carried out vandalism in the house of Sonagazi upazila Juba Dal general secretary Khorshed Alam in Feni.
In Faridpur, Chhatra League and Juba League leaders and activists have confined several BNP leaders including former MP Yeasmin Ara Haque to the district power office.
Police in separate drives detained 15 leaders and activists of BNP from different areas of Magura in last 24 hours since Friday morning, reports UNB.
Police arrested the BNP men for carrying out vandalism and obstructing vehicular movement, said Tariqul Islam, additional superintendent of police.
In Brahmanbaria, law enforcers in special drives detained 28 leaders and activists of BNP from different areas of the district, according to BNP.
Special drives are being conducted in all upazilas of the district to maintain law and order, said Md Imtiaz Ahmed of special branch of district police.
In Chittagong, police detained 30 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami during drives at different upazilas of the district from Friday to Saturday morning, reports UNB.
Additional superintendent of police of Chittagong Muhammad Rezaul Masud said they arrested the BNP-Jamaat activists from Sitakunda, Mirsarai, Phatikchhari, Hathazari, Raozan, Boalkhali, Chandanaish, Satkania, Lohagora and Banshkhali upazilas.
The arrestees included 25 BNP men and 5 Jamaat activists.
