Seven policemen have been suspended in connection with Friday’s ‘police firing’ on some demonstrators in Kalihati upazila of Tangail that left three people dead and 50 others injured, agencies report. “Three sub-inspectors and four constables have been withdrawn and a 3-member probe committee headed by Additional DIG Md Alamgir Alam has been formed to investigate the incident,” Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman told UNB on Saturday.
The committee was asked to submit its report within a week. Earlier in the day, Dhaka divisional commissioner Zillar Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman and acting police super of Tangail Sanjoy Sarkar visited the spot.
Besides, another three-member probe committee headed by an additional district magistrate was formed to look into the matter, sources at Tangail Deputy Commissioner’s office said. UNB Tangail correspondent reports: The bodies of three people were handed over to their respective family members for burial after post-mortem.
Three people were killed and 50 others injured, four with bullets, as police allegedly opened fire and charged baton on some people demonstrating against torture on a youth and his mother in Kalihati upazila on Friday afternoon.
The incident took place when police obstructed the procession brought out by a group of people of Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas during their march towards Kalihati Police Station to lay a siege to the police station demanding an exemplary punishment of the culprits who had stripped naked a youth in front of his mother and took photo of the incident at Satutia village in the upazila on Tuesday.
