At least six people, including a bank manager and a robber, were killed and 25 others injured during a daring attempt of robbery in a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd at Kathgora, Ashulia on Tuesday. Angry locals caught two of the robbers – Raju and Mamun – and beat to death one of them. The other one was handed over to police. The deceased included the bank manager, two customers, a local grocery shop owner, a security guard of the bank and a robber.
Four of the deceased were identified as bank manager Waliullah, two customers—Zillur Rahman, Palash and shop owner Manir Hossain. Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, said a gang of 15-20 robbers entered the bank around 1 pm. Holding the bank staff and customers hostage at gunpoint, the robbers asked the manger to give them the key of the vault. As the bank manager denied to give them the key, the robbers opened fire on the people at the bank and stabbed them indiscriminately, leaving 30 people injured.
The injured were rushed to Enam Medcial College Hospital where doctors declared four people, including the bank manager, dead. Meanwhile, the bank staff and local people caught one of the robbers and gave him a good thrashing, leaving him dead on the spot.
