AL leader hacked dead in Cox’s Bazar

A local Awami League leader was hacked to death at Bangla Bazar in Maheshkhali upazila on Wednesday, Agencies report.

The victim was identified as Ziabul Haque, a leader of Matarbari union unit of Awami League and resident of Madhyampara. He was also the former president of union Jubo League.

Victim’s brother Sarwar Kamal, also a member of Matarbari union parishad, said a group of miscreants swooped on the AL leader when he went to Bangla Bazar in the upazila headquarters around 4pm and chopped him indiscriminately, leaving him injured.

He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 10pm, said officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station Pradip Kumar Das.

He also said they were trying to arrest the killers. Kamal claimed that a group of extortionists had long been demanding money from business establishments of Ziabul.
