At least six leaders and activists of Awami League sustained bullet injuries in a factional clash in the city on Friday centering the party nominations for the upcoming union parishad (UP) election, agencies report. The identity of the injured could not be ascertained immediately.
General secretary of Chittagong South district unit AL Mofizur Rahman said they were scheduled to select the nominees for the posts of chairmen in the upcoming election of the UPs under Anwara upazila and Karnafuli thana. However, the programme was cancelled, Mofizur added.
Following that, local leaders and activists of Anwara upazila and Karnafuli thana rushed to the office of Chittagong South district unit AL and carried out an attack around 11am. At one stage, leaders and activists of the office obstructed the attackers, leading to a violent clash.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 12 rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control. During the action, six AL men received bullet injuries, said officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Jasim Uddin.
