A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of detective branch (DB) of police in Shambhuganj, Mymensingh early Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased Bacchu alias Bhebel Bacchu was accused in 15 drug-related cases, said district DB police officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman.
Being informed that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area around 2:45am for sharing drug money, a team of detective conducted the drive there, said the OC.
Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders hurled brick chips on them and later opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to fire back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, he said.
The gunfight left Bacchu bullet injured. Later, the injured was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the physician declared him dead, he added.
Police recovered 200 pieces of yaba tablets and four bullet shells from the spot, OC Ashiqur Rahman said.
Two policemen were also injured during the ‘gunfight’, he said.
The incident, however, was not verified independently.
With the latest, at least 122 people were killed in alleged gunfights with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.
