The Arsenal boss has been in charge of the Gunners for 19 years and is vindicating his board’s decision to keep faith with him.  He said: “Garry Monk surprised me as he had done a good job last year. I was quite surprised. “Why do managers lose their jobs? The modern world is more impatient. It is always down to people at the clubs.

“Public opinion often lives in the present and you could say they need to be stronger than ever to resist to that.”  Despite the glory of Wednesday night, Wenger knows his side have no time to reflect as they prepare for a Sunday away trip to Aston Villa.

He said: “We came back Thursday morning but we have no injury worries after the game. No-one of the short term injuries will be back. “We wanted to stay in the Champions League, it was very unlikely. It was a fantastic performance in the end that got us through. Now we’re in it let’s focus again on the Premier League.”
