Over 50,000 people in low-lying areas of six upazilas in the district have been marooned due to heavy rains triggered by depression in the Bay of Bengal. Locals said the low-lying areas of Mongla, Morelganj, Rampal, Kachua, Sharankhola and Sadar upazilas have been inundated for the last four days due to the heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, a 200-meter long embankment at Tafalbari in Sharankhola upazila was washed away.

Aman seedbeds on a vast tract of land have been submerged while some shrimp enclosures also went under water. The loading and unloading of goods at Mongla port has been suspended. Besides, the erosion by the Panhusi and Madumati rivers has increased rapidly due to the heavy rain, agencies report.
