Bangladesh govt. warns over traveling to Libya

Foreign ministry has strongly advised Bangladeshi nationals against travelling to war-torn Libya until further instructions.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation and further requesting Bangladesh Nationals to refrain from visiting Libya until further notification in this regard,” said a foreign ministry press release.

Last July, Bangladesh suspended its mission in Libya and relocated its staff to Tunisia.

Around 40,000 Bangladeshis are currently living amongst uncertainty in Libya. In peril, some have been forced to take risky voyage through Mediterranean into Europe.

Their plights came to light after a boat carrying around 500 migrants capsized in the sea on August 24. At least 78 Bangladeshis were on the boat. Of them, 24 died and 54 were rescued.

The rescued later told Bangladesh embassy officials that security concerns in Libya forced them to take the risky journey.
