The Bangladesh Bank (BB) probe body final report on reserve heist would be made public in 15 days, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said here today, agencies report. The minister, after receiving the final report of the inquiry committee at his office, told journalists the findings would be made public in 15 to 20 days.
Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, the head of the 3-member probe committee and a former governor of the central bank, submitted the final report to the finance minister at his secretariat office. BUET Prof Dr Mohammad Kaikobad and Banking Division Additional Secretary Gokul Chand Das are the two other members of the committee formed on March 14 to investigate the cyber heist involving over $100 million from its account with Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
When asked, the finance minister said he could not make any comment on the report, but would make it public after going through it. He said the probe committee submitted both the interim report and final report within the timeframe. The committee, formed in mid-March, was asked to submit the interim report by one month and the final report in 75 days.
Dr Farashuddin said there are some changes in the findings of the final report from the initial one. He, however, could not elaborate the changed findings. “Earlier, we thought that Bangladesh Bank was not responsible for the reserve heist, but things got changed as investigation was going on”, he said, adding that the SWIFT could not avoid its responsibility of the incident.
Replying to a question, he said the committee could not find out the names of the foreign hackers, involved in the incident, and it was also not included in their terms of reference.
