The last rites of blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy, hacked to death by suspected Islamist militants, have been performed in his village home in Pirojpur. He was cremated on Saturday midnight at the Sadar Upazila’s Tona Union, agencies report. Niloy, who was known as ‘Niloy Neel’ on social networking sites, was murdered at his east Gorhan home in Dhaka on Friday.
He was the fourth blogger killed in Bangladesh in the last six months.
Forensic experts said they found 12 wounds by sharp weapons on his body and that the assailants stabbed him repeatedly to ensure his death. Niloy’s body was taken to his village home on Saturday night. Hundreds of people gathered there to catch a last glimpse of the blogger, who they say was affable and soft-spoken. He started his school life at Chalisha Government Primary School and passed SSC from Tejdaskathi High School and HSC from Government Suhrawardy College.
The 27-year-old worked at an NGO after obtaining an MA from the Dhaka University. He was an activist of the Ganajagaran Mancha, a popular movement demanding maximum penalty for war crimes convicts and a ban on religion-based political parties. Niloy used to blog regularly against communalism and fundamentalism and received threats from extremists for his writings, people close to him said.
His relatives said he visited them a few days ago. Joyasree Chatterjee, Niloy’s younger sister, said her brother had no enmity with anyone. She demanded justice for her brother.
