Local BNP on Thursday called a 48-hour hartal in the district from Sunday protesting vandalism and torching of its office allegedly by Swechchhasebak League men in the district town, reports UNB. Witnesses said the activists of the ruling Awami League’s youth wing brought out a procession in the town following a rally at Zero Point around 7pm. At one stage, they attacked the district BNP office at Nagarbari Sarak.
The attackers vandalised the office and set fire to it at one stage. On information, a fire-fighting unit rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Sadar police camp in-charge Manjurul Haque said a group of miscreants vandalised the furniture at the district BNP office by breaking open the gate and fled before police reached the scene. District BNP president Saiful Islam alleged that the ruling party men went on the rampage at their office. He demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the miscreants involved in the attack.
Following the incident, BNP announced a protest programme at upazila level for Sunday and the 48-hour hartal from 6am Sunday to 6am Tuesday.
