Nine people including two couples were killed and 12 injured as a human hauler plunged into a roadside ditch after being hit by a bus on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Mymensingh Sadar upazila this morning.
Seven of the victims were identified as Khokon Miah, 45, his wife Shamsun Nahar, 35, Mobarak Hossain, 35, his wife Minara Begum, 30, and Azizul Haque, 15, of Mokamia village in Phulpur upazila and Shahadat Hossain, 19, of Baushi in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh; and Sagar Miah, 25, of Sharmara village in Bakshianj upazila of Jamalpur district, police said.
Identities of the two male victims could not be known immediately, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting police.
Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the accident took place in Beltoli area when a human hauler locally known as leguna plunged into a ditch after being hit by a bus around 6:30am, killing five on the spot and injuring 15 others.
The injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where (MMCH) where four others died later, said police. On information, police and fire service members rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and sent it to the MMCH morgue for autopsy, said Sub-inspector of the police station Ashim Kumar Das.
The passengers of both the human hauler and bus were rushing for different destinations from Dhaka ahead of Eid, police said. Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee the scene, the OC said, agencies report.
