They called the morning-to-evening strike for Monday to demand an end to severe traffic congestion on the highway.

On Sunday, the Bus Owners Association and the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Union jointly called the strike to demand a fix to the heavy congestion at Feni and Daudkandi, Inter-District Bus Owners Association General Secretary Kafil Uddin.

Following the announcement, the minister at the secretariat announced that the government will build the overpass in 25 days.

Later in a meeting with the Chattogram police, transport leader Kafil said: “We have called off the strike as the minister has promised to construct the overpass in 25 days.”

The minister said one of the two lanes for the rail overpass will be inaugurated on May 15, which is expected to ease congestion.

Construction on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway rail overpass at Feni’s Mohipal has caused traffic congestion in the area. The congestion has extended from Mohipal to Cumilla and Chattogram in the past couple of days.

The five-to-six-hour trip on the Dhaka-Chattogram route is now taking 15 to 17 hours. Many people have cancelled their trips and turned back in the face of such heavy congestion.

Travellers are facing increased difficulties and transport owners are facing financial problems, said Kafil. “If this congestion continues, it is likely to get even worse during Ramadan and the Eid.”
