An 11-year-old girl has died after lightning toppled a tree on to a cabin at a camp in the US state of Indiana, Sky News reports. The incident occurred at about 3am on Tuesday as several storms swept through the area, about 40 miles (64km) southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Other campers and three adult camp counsellors were also inside the cabin, Camp Livingston said in a statement on its Facebook page. No one else was hurt. The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The family was notified immediately. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” the camp said. “At this time, we are not releasing the name of the camper, out of respect for the family. We have resources and professionals at camp to help everyone deal with this tragedy.”
Camp Livingston was founded more than 90 years ago and serves as a summer camp for Jewish children and teens, according to its website.
