THIS was the last time eight-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle was seen alive, The Sun reports. In the CCTV footage, the youngster can be seen walking through a retail store with an older man believed to be her kidnaper and killer. The video was released by the State’s Attorney Office in Florida, US, earlier this week. The prime suspect has been named as Donald Smith.Smith is accused of the 2013 sexual battery and murder of Perrywinckle.
The surveilance video shows Smith walking alongside the little girl. He allegedly lured both mother and daughter by offering to buy them new clothes. Hours later, at 11.18pm that evening, Perrywinckle’s mother Rayne called 911 desperately looking for the child, who she says was last seen in the company of Smith.
Ms Perrywinckle can be heard saying: “I’m hoping he’s not raping her right now because I’ve had that done to me and it’s not fun.” The desperate mother told the operator how the suspect was driving a white van. Smith was arrested 10 hours later after his vehicle was spotted by a police patrol officer.
The child’s body was found in front of a church in Jacksonville, Florida, the next day. Smith has been on the sex offender’s list since 1993. He awaits trial for the kidnaping, rape and murder of the little girl.
