A MAN in China has had a 12-year-old tumour removed after it left him looking heavily pregnant, agencies report. Zhang Cheng, 33, spotted the growth in 2004, but he could not pay for the surgery to have it removed.
The cash-strapped man tried to heal his tumour with traditional medicine, but the growth kept getting bigger. At its heaviest, the benign tumour weighed 33lbs and was threatening his health.
Zhang was talked into borrowing a large sum of money to pay for the operation. Medics said that the swollen mass was putting too much pressure on Zhang’s internal organs.
Zhang was taken to the Military General Hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The heavy tumour was removed in a six-hour operation by experts from three departments.
Even though the surgery was a success, Zhang is still at risk of heavy bleeding. Lead surgeon Doctor Dai Ruiwu said: “Due to the tumour’s position the surgery was extremely risky. There was a high chance of heavy bleeding.
“The patient is now being kept in the intensive care unit for further observation.”
