A heavy monsoon shower submerged many roads in the capital on Friday afternoon, inflicting sufferings on commuters, agencies report. The rainwater inundated roads in Mirpur, Kazipara, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Merul Badda, Rampura, Motijheel, Shyampur, Demra and other Old Dhaka areas of the city.
The Met Office recorded 16mm of rain in the capital from 3 pm to 6 pm, said Mohammad Gias Uddin, duty assistant at the office. He also said light to moderate rain is likely to occur in the capital till 1 am on Saturday.
The city dwellers had to endure sufferings while travelling through roads connecting Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Eskaton, Dilu Road, Siddheshwari and Rampura as the construction works on Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover have riddled the roads with huge potholes.
The downpour slowed down vehicular movement leading to traffic congestions on the city roads. “During monsoon, the sufferings of the city commuters mount as many roads are potholed. Whether there is rain or no rain, you must suffer while crossing some dirty roads,” said Mizanur Rahman, a resident of Malibagh.
Even a light to moderate rain causes inundation and huge sufferings for the commuters in the battered city’s thoroughfares, particularly those in Moghbazar, Malibagh and Shantinagar areas, he added.
