Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) today suspended the spectrum of Citycell as the mobile phone operator failed to pay Tk 477.63 crore in dues, Agencies report. “We have suspended the spectrum of Citycell around 6:00pm,” BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood said.
State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said they suspended the Citycell’s spectrum in line with the Telecommunication Act as it could not pay the dues on time after getting a court order. “Now, there is no way to return back from the suspension. Next steps will be the cancellation of its license,” she said while addressing a press conference at BTRC office this evening.
Addressing the press conference, BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood said Citycell must have to pay the dues. “No alternative is there except to pay the dues.” Meanwhile, a team of BTRC officials accompanied by RAB and police went to the Citycell office in Mohakhali and cordoned off the head office of the mobile operator since 4:30pm today.
The officials also entered the office at Pacific Centre and shut down some equipment used to provide voice, text and internet services to the customers, sources said.
