The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday set August 5 for submission of explanation by Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, also a veteran freedom fighter, as to why he would not be punished over contempt of court charge.
The tribunal set the date accepting Zafrullah’s plea seeking two weeks’ time to submit the explanation.
Today was set for submitting the explanation but Zafrullah’s lawyer Abdul Baset Majumder pleaded for allowing Zafrullah two more weeks for preparation.
Earlier, the tribunal on July 12 asked Zafrullah Chowdhury to explain in person today over the contempt of court accepting a plea filed on July 6 by five individuals, including three freedom fighters, seeking commencing of contempt proceedings against him.
The tribunal had drawn fresh contempt proceedings against Zafrullah on July 12 for the comments he made after sentencing him for a contempt charge on June 10.
Zafrullah was jailed for one-hour which he served in the court room for his criticism on journalist David Bergman’s sentence.
The petitioners’ lawyer Khan Mohammad Shameem Aziz on July 6 had told New Age that following the June 10 sentence against him, Zafrullah remarked ‘the verdict reflected mental sickness of three tribunal judges.’ Such remarks were tantamount to the contempt of court and that is why his clients filed the petition.
The petitioners included freedom fighters – Monoranjan Ghosal, Asgar Ali and Sheikh Nazrul Islam – and Ganajagaran Mancha’s Kamal Pasha Chowdhury and FM Shahin
The ICT-2 had also imposed a fine of Tk 5,000, in default, one more month jail term. On June 16, the Appellate Division stayed until July 5 the monetary fine on Zafrullah.
