Country braces for worsening flood

The country’s flood situation will worsen further over the next three days inundating many new areas, adding woes to flood victims, Agencies report.

According to a special flood bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre issued on 11 am on Monday, the water level in the Brahmaputra River many swell by 45 centimetres in the next 72 hours.

The bulletin says the water level in the upstream areas of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers will continue to surge as water level has increased by 32 centimetres in the Indian part of Brahmaputra River in last 24 hours while 32 centimetres in its Bangladesh part.

The water level has risen by 22 centimetres in Padma River and 10 centimetres in the Mehna Basin in the last 24 hours.

The flood situation has deteriorated in the country’s north and northwest areas of Brahmaputra and Meghna basins in the last 4-5 days and it may hit new areas of the country’s central region.

Despite increasing water level in Ganges River basin in the last 72 hours, water is now flowing bellow the danger level there. Water is also flowing 60-150 centimetres below the danger level in five rivers surrounded by Dhaka city. But, the trend of water level rise in these rivers will continue, the bulletin added.
