CU student killed in BCL factional clash; 25 detained

Sunday’s clash took place within a month of the BCL factions saying they will peacefully co-exist.
BCL’s frequent internal strife has led to much tension at the Chittagong University for the last three years.
The dead has been identified as Tapash Roy, a second-year Sanskrit student.
Witnesses said members of the ruling Awami League affiliate factions ‘CFC’ and ‘VX’ clashed after paying respects to martyred intellectuals in the morning. Roy was shot in front of Shah Amanat Hall and died at the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
The CFC claims Roy to be their supporter.
Police have arrested 25 BCL activists from the Shahjalal Hall following the clash.
Witnesses said the two sides locked horns after several ‘VX’ members made derogatory remarks at a CFC supporter.
Proctor Siraj Ud Dowla said the two factions exchanged fire.
Roy was hit by a bullet on his back while five others were also injured.
Additional police have been deployed on the campus.
Similar factional clashes last month at the CU over occupation of a residential hall had irked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Later, the factions had agreed on’peaceful co-existence’.
