The government on Monday decided to incorporate 16 more unions into the two city corporations of Dhaka, expanding the area of the city by more than double, UNB reports. The decision was taken at the meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reforms (NICAR) held at the Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The LGRD Ministry placed the proposal.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said that the NICAR decided to include 8 nearby unions in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 8 other unions in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), aiming to provide better civic amenities to the inhabitants of these unions.
Shafiul Alam said that the total areas of the two city corporations now stands at nearly 129 square kilometers—83 square kilometres under the DNCC and 46 square kilometres under the DSCC. Following the NICAR’s approval of inclusion of the new unions, an area of 178.75 sq km would be added to the two city corporations — 114.58 square kilometres to the DNCC and 64.17 square kilometres to the DSCC.
As per the decision, the Cabinet Secretary said Beraid, Badda, Bhatara, Satarkul, Horirampur, Uttarkhan, Dakkhinkhan and Dumni unions would be included in the DNCC while DSCC would get Shyampur, Matuail, Demra, Dania, Sarulia, Dakkhingaon, Nasirabad and Manda unions.
Shafiul Alam said NICAR in its meeting also approved a proposal to upgrade Karnaphuli Police Station of Patia Upazila under Chittagong district into a new Upazila. According to the decision, it will be the 490th Upazila of the country and will be formed with five unions , he said adding that the total population of the new Upazila is 1,62,140.
