Fake re-registration of SIM; US$50 in fine

Mobile phone operators would be fined US$50 for each SIM that has been re-registered without the consent of the national identity cardholder, Tarana Halim, state minister for Telecommunication, said today.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) identified approximately 1000 SIMs which were re-registered with fake subscribers, she told reporters at BTRC office in Dhaka.

“BTRC will begin charging the mobile operators US$50 as fine for each SIM within a week,” she said, after a meeting with the BTRC officials including its chairman and telecom secretary, agencies report.
