The power supply to South Chittagong, and Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts started resuming on Sunday evening, nearly four hours of suspension following a fire at Shikalbaha Power Plant under Karnaphuli thana here, agencies report. Power plant manager Bhuban Bijoy Dutta said the power connections started to return to normalcy at 7:30pm. Earlier, a fire broke out at a 132KV transformer of the plant around 4 pm due to technical fault.
On information, eight fire-fighting units rushed in and brought the fire under control around 5pm, said deputy assistant director of Agrabad Fire Service Jasim Uddin. Contacted, Chittagong Power Development Board (PDB) chief engineer (distribution-South region) Azharul Islam said a transformer was damaged totally due to the fire, which snapped the power supply in different upazilas of South Chittagong and all areas of Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts.
But, the power supply was normal in the port city, he said. Later, the electricity supply to Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban started resuming from 7:30pm. However, some parts of South Chittagong still remained in dark as of 9pm on Sunday, he said. A probe committee will be formed to investigate the fire incident and assess the losses, Azharul Islam added.
