A major fire broke out at the Crystal Tower residential apartments near Hindmata Cinema in Mumbai’s Parel area on Wednesday. People are stranded on the top floors and rescue operations are on, The HT reports.

The top floors and the stairs of the high-rise quickly filled up with smoke from the fire that started on the 12th floor at 8.55 am , fire officials said.

Chief fire officer P Rahangdale said, “There is a lot of smoke on the 12th floor where the fire started, and the floors above. Smoke is logged in the staircase and all exits. Fire fighting and rescue operations are going on.”

Eight people were rescued with the help of cranes. No injuries were reported and those rescued were sent to KEM hospital for check ups.

Ten year old Zen Sadawarkar, who lives on the 16th floor and was rescued by the fire brigade said, “there was smoke everywhere, and we heard people calling out to us, so we rushed to the window. Later, the fire brigade personnel brought us down.”
