Bangladesh Hawkers’ Sangram Parishad (BHSP) have alleged that a hawker leader died after being hit by a bulldozer of Dhaka South City Corporation during an eviction drive at the North gate of Baitul Mokarram National Mosque on Saturday, Agencies report.
The deceased was identified as Jamal Hossain, a hawker leader of the North gate area of the national mosque.
In a statement, leaders of the BHSP alleged that the DSCC workers hit Jamal with a bulldozer around 1pm while evicting the hawkers and destroying their goods leaving him dead on the spot.
Convener of the BHSP Abul Hossain, its member secretary Sekandar Hayat and president of Bangladesh Hawkers’ Union Abul Hashem Kabir in a joint statement demanded exemplary punishment of the DSCC employees involved in the incident, and also demanded to stop the eviction drive.
Many hawkers were injured and lost their limbs after being hit by the DSCC’s bulldozers during eviction drive in the past but the authority concerned did not carry out any investigation in this regard, the statement said.
The BHSP will organize a protest rally in front of National Press Club in the city protesting the death of their leader on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, sources at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said the hawker leader Jamal was declared dead when he was rushed to the hospital at around 2:10 pm. The body was Kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
Contacted, Public Relation Officer of the DSCC Uttam Kumar Ray said he did not know anything about it.
Chief Estate Officer of the DSCC Abdul Malek was not available for comment about the incident.
