A MAN who once weighed a whopping 47 stone, has undergone bypass surgery – saving both his life and his marriage, The Sun reports.  Gideon Yeakley, 33, from Mustang, Oklahoma, who has featured on the TLC reality series ‘My 600lb Life’, relocated his family to be close to Houston-based weight loss surgeon Dr. Younan Nowzaradan.

Before his surgery Gideon would feel pain all over his body and his size meant that doing almost anything was extremely difficult. Every day he would use deodorant between his rolls of fat and feel disgusted with himself. Despite his unhappiness and wanting to change, Gideon would feel starving all the time and secretly eat extra food in the morning before his wife and kids woke up.

When Gideon met his wife Kayleigh, she didn’t care about his weight and loved him for him – and her son Jonathon even became like Gideon’s own son. Before his surgery, Gideon admitted that he had been relying on food for comfort since he was a child. His parents had divorced when he was only eight-years-old, and he was forced to choose which parent he wanted to live with.

By the time Gideon graduated from high school, he weighed more than 28 stone and his relationship with food continued to get worse. On visiting Dr. Nowzaradan, Gideon was shocked to hear that he wanted him to lose three-and-a-half stone before his next visit. Although he tried his hardest, Gideon only managed to lose just over two stone in time for the next visit – however, it was enough to go ahead with his life saving surgery.

After his surgery Gideon continued to put in the hard work needed to lose more weight. However, while Gideon now had hardly any desire to eat, he had replaced his addiction to food with a desire to rest all day long.

A tearful Kayleigh admitted: “It is really hard because I know that moving here, and him being able to have the surgery is something that potentially saved his life, but on the flip side knowing that everything we gave up, it makes it really hard to say, ‘Yeah, it was worth it’.”  When Gideon told Dr. Nowzaradan that he didn’t have any energy, the surgeon told him he was using fatigue as a coping mechanism – the same way he had used food in the past.

Believing the issue was mental, not medical, Dr. Nowzaradan said Gideon would have to see a therapist if his energy levels didn’t improve. However, six months since the start of his weight loss journey, Gideon had yet to find a job in Texas, and Kayleigh chose to move back to Oklahoma with her parents – while Gideon chose to stay put.

Soon, Gideon had lost almost 13 stone, but eventually had to move back to Oklahoma with his family. However, despite his massive weight loss, he still lacked the energy that he desired and realised that he needed more help. Gideon and Kayleigh decided to visit his therapist Shawn Maguire together, and it was during this session that his wife learned of all the hidden pain that her husband was suffering from.

With the help of the therapist, Gideon started to regain his energy and was able to some quality family time. A month before his final weigh in, Gideon weighed 32 stone and had begun working as a juvenile detention officer. He had also started to take Jonathan to school – as well as being the partner that Kayleigh hoped he would be.

By the end of the show, Gideon has lost a staggering 15 stone and was still losing weight. He was finally able to enjoy physical activities with his family and Gideon was finally happy that he was providing for his wife and son – his weight loss not just saving his life, but his marriage too.
