Detectives arrested an Indian citizen reportedly with 10 firearms, 12 magazines and 35 bullets from Gabtoli area in the city on Monday night, UNB reports. The arrestee was identified as Khairul Islam Mandal alias Shariful Islam, a resident of 24 Pargana in Bengal state of India.
Tipped off, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) conducted a drive in the area and arrested Khairul at night, said Deputy Commissioner (PR) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman. He said the law enforcers also recovered 10 firearms, 12 magazines and 35 bullets from his possession.
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre on Tuesday, DMP Joint Commissioner (DB) Abdul Baten said Khairul confessed to having good connection with criminal groups both in Bangladesh and India. With the help of the criminal gangs, he said, used to bring firearms to Bangladesh through the border and used to sell those to criminals in the capital, he said.
“Though we’re yet to confirm the origin of the firearms, we suspected that those might have been made in India,” Baten added. Meanwhile, another DB team arrested a man, Md Belal Hossain, and recovered seven vehicles including four microbuses, three pickup vans and two private cars from Jatrabari area in the city on Tuesday night.
