Forget the great American road trip, a savvy traveller has cracked an even better way to cross the US – by train, The Sun reports.

Travel blogger Derek Low says you can make the 3,400-mile coast-to-coast trip from San Francisco to New York for just $213 (£175).

Derek made the journey himself, but also  incorporated a series of stops along the way, including Salt Lake City, Denver in Colorado and Chicago.

For the majority of the trip, Derek travelled on the California Zephyr, a train that runs 2,438 miles from San Francisco to Chicago.

Even though Derek’s train journey cost the same rail ticket from Bath to Edinburgh in the UK, the trains he travelled on were incredibly luxurious.

He got decent food in the dining car, like a rack of baby back ribs that came with a proper plate and cutlery.

The chairs that passengers could sleep on were considerably roomier than an aeroplane seat, with lots of legroom and an ability to recline 40 degrees.

There were also sleeper cabins with proper beds, but they were far more expensive.

Once of the most impressive things about the train though, was the Sightseer Lounge car – a carriage fitted with enormous windows that wrapped upward into the ceiling.

The huge windows meant the passengers could properly enjoy the amazing scenery of the American wilderness as they passed through it.

At one point, an expert from the California State Railroad Museum even came onboard to give live commentary of the scenery.

He said of the trip: “Traveling by train gives you a glimpse into the soul of America.

“The experience rewards you with far more stories and experiences and sights than you could ever witness alone in a car, eyes fixed on the road, or on a five-hour flight across the country.

“If you want to see tourist America, rent a Cadillac, get on Route 66 and stop off at a few cutesy diners and motels, if you want to see the real America in all its spectacular, crazy, kooky glory, get on the train.”

While Derek paid $429 (£353) for a 15-day rail pass, he said that you can actually do it for much less.

The rail pass includes 8 train rides which he used to explore other cities after his cross-country journey.

For some people though, buying the direct California Zephyr ticket from San Francisco to Chicago, and the Lake Shore Limited ticket from Chicago to New York would suffice though.

Tickets for that entire journey are available from just $213 (£175).
