The High Court on Tuesday granted six-month bail to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation case filed in Dhaka over her remarks about freedom fighters and martyred intellectuals, reports UNB.

The HC bench of justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order after hearing on a petition filed by Khaleda’s counsel.

The petition was filed on Monday after a Dhaka Court denied bail in the case on 7 August.

Lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Khaleda while deputy attorney general Kamrul Ahsan Khan Aslam for the state.

On 5 January, 2016, AB Siddiqui, president of Jananetri Parishad, filed the case with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (CMM) in Dhaka.

As per prosecution, Khaleda Zia questioned the actual number of 1971 liberation war martyrs at a discussion held in Dhaka on 21 December, 2015. Besides, she made objectionable remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
