BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will sit with her party’s standing committee members on Sunday night to discuss the country’s latest political situation and work out the party’s strategy to press for forming a neutral and stronger Election Commission (EC), UNB reports.
“The BNP chairperson has conveyed a meeting of BNP standing committee. It will be held at her Gulshan office at 9pm on Sunday,” her media wing member Shamsuddin Didar told UNB on Saturday midnight.
Contacted, a BNP standing committee member said the meeting was convened to discuss the country’s current political situation. The meeting will also elaborately discuss formation of the search committee and work the party’s strategy to mount pressure on the government and the search panel to constitute a stronger and neutral EC.
Earlier on Wednesday, President Abdul Hamid formed the six-member search committee headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hassan for constituting the next EC as the tenure of the current one will expire in February next.
The other members of the search panel include Justice Obaidul Hassan, Public Service Commission Chairman Muhammed Sadique, Dhaka University Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, Chittagong University Pro-Vice-chancellor Shireen Akhter, and Comptroller Auditor General Masud Ahmed.
BNP has already voiced frustration over the search committee, saying most of its members are controversial and they have link with Awami League.
