Police detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Chittagong city unit president Shahdat Hossain from the capital and port city respectively on Thursday, agencies report.
Police picked Shimul Biswas up from the special court premises as he faces 20 arrest warrants, said court sources. He was detained immediate after a Dhaka court sentenced BNP chief Khaleda Zia to five-year imprisonment and five others to 10 years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office said that police arrested Shahdat from the port city. The ‘mass arrest’ was going on across the country centring on the verdict, the BNP leader added.
