Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the Special Security Force (SSF) to make sure that security measures do not alienate her from the people.
She appreciated the SSF’s competence and professionalism at a programme on Thursday marking the elite force’s 29th founding anniversary, agencies report. “You have responsibilities [for providing security]. But you also have to remember that the people are our source of strength. We cannot be kept away from them.”
The SSF is responsible for providing security to the president, head of the government and any person designated as VIP by the government. Hasina said her life would ‘lose meaning’ if she was cut off from the people.
“I’m not in politics for personal gains,” she said. “I am here to change the lives of my people, specially the down-trodden.” “I’m working to achieve that goal. There’s nothing I want for myself.”
She recalled the killing of most of her family members on Aug 15, 1975. Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana survived, as they were not in the country. “I thank Allah because Bangladesh is making socio-economic progress after I got the chance to serve the country,” the prime minister added.
She said her government was working on to build Bangladesh as a developed country so that no one can look down upon it anymore. The World Bank has identified Bangladesh as a lower-middle income country earlier this month. “I want to spend every minute of my life for the development of the country,” she said. “That’s why those working with me have to endure a bit of hardship.”
She said her only satisfaction was when the people enjoyed the fruit of her labour. The prime minister emphasised appropriate training to combat terrorism and militancy. “Whenever we came to power, we tried to root out terrorism and militancy from Bangladesh,” she added.
