Man Utd extend Young deal

Manchester United have triggered a clause in Ashley Young’s contract to extend his deal for a further year, according to Sky Sports.

Young, who has made 30 appearances this season, has seen good performances at full-back rewarded by manager Jose Mourinho, keeping natural left-back Luke Shaw on the bench.

The former Aston Villa midfielder’s exploits have not gone unnoticed by England boss Gareth Southgate, who has selected Young in his last two squads.

He will be available for selection for England’s forthcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

Young was left out of United’s starting line-up for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup, but was introduced at half-time by Mourinho after the United boss was left angered by Shaw’s performance.

After a four-year spell at Villa Park, Young was brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 for a fee in the region of £16m.

The 32-year-old began his career at Watford and he scored a sensational double on his return to his boyhood club in November as United earned a 4-2 win at Vicarage Road – he had not scored since May 2016.
