A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his ‘cohorts’ and Detective Branch (DB) of police at Tongabari in Ashulia early Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased is Rubel, 26.

Police suspected that the deceased might be the key accused of killing a certain Shahjahan who was killed during a robbery in Ashlia area of Savar.

On 13 February last, according to the police, Shahjahan Miah, 35, a driver of ‘Dhaleswari Paribahan’, was killed and his assistant and supervisor were injured during a robbery in his bus on Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Sreepur area under Ashulia thana.

Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted a drive early in the morning in the area, where some robbers were preparing to commit robberies, calimed DB officer-in-charge AFM Sayed.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, which triggered the ‘gunfight’.

At one stage, Rubel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene. Police later recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

The law enforcement’s version of the event was, however, not verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim’s family
