Briton Naomi Broady saw her impressive run at the Citi Open in Washington ended by top seed Ekaterina Makarova. Broady, who battled through qualifying and then claimed a career-best win over Jarmila Gajdosova in the first round of the main draw, again served well – slamming down 14 aces – but in the end succumbed 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to the world number 12.
The British number three was broken only once but at the same time could force just a single break-point opportunity on her opponent’s serve. Still, her run in the US capital will see her ranking rise when the new WTA list is published on Monday. She is currently down at 212th.
In the day’s other matches, third seed Belinda Bencic was upset by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, going down 6-2 6-4, while home hope Christina McHale saw off Yulia Putintseva in a tight contest, eventually prevailing 6-2 1-6 7-5. McHale will now meet Pavlyuchenkova in the last eight, Sky Sports reports.
