A Chinese national who was convicted of rape and paedophile offences in the UK but managed to flee the country has been arrested in Hong Kong, Sky News reports.

Joseph Tsang was due to be sentenced for two counts of rape and sexual assault, making indecent images of children, and sexual activity with a child under 16.

The 31-year-old computer technician and former competitive ice skater, of Sandy Lane, Oxford, was convicted in his absence of the rape charges after he failed to turn up in court.

He was described by police as a “high-risk” sex offender because he used his involvement in the sport to groom his female victims.

According to the Oxford Mail, Tsang fled the UK after his bail conditions were varied and his passport returned on a temporary basis so he could conduct a business transaction in Hong Kong.

He was detained by Hong Kong police yesterday and has appeared at the city’s Eastern Magistrates’ Court where he was refused bail and ordered to re-appear on 23 November.

He is expected to be deported to Britain anywhere between eight weeks and two years.

Chief Inspector John Turner of Thames Valley Police said Tsang will be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court for a total of 10 convictions.
