Online media policy finalized with free of cost registration

Congratulations pour in as BONPA makes successful move

At long last, the online media policy has been finalized with provision for free of cost registration which was a long time demand of Bangladesh Online News Portal Association (BONPA).
The decision was made at a meeting of National Online Mass Media Policy Committee at 11.am on March 16 last held at PID VIP conference room of the secretariat.
Chaired by Chief Information Officer Tasir Ahmed of Information Ministry, the policy finalization meeting was addressed among others by IT specialist Mostaf Jabbar, BONPA president Shamsul Alam Swapan, NIB Editor, Barrister Zakir Ahmed, V-News Editor, Joyanta Acharja, BTRC Asst. Director Zakir Hossain Khan and Deputy Secretary Mohammed Ismail Hossain.
Speakers systematically focused on different clauses and sub-clauses of online media policy and finalized the policy with recommendations of correction and addition if necessary.
As per clause 6, 1, 3, 9, it is stated that any news portal owner publishing vulgar write ups , pictures or cartoons or fuelling militancy will face legal punishment.
Besides, 07.5.1.10 clauses state that publication indicating assault on women and children in the form of rape, adultery, illicit trade involving women and children, prostitution, pimping, indecent posture, scenes of physical relation will not be allowed.
“Online policy has been made age-suited. We have been able to present a nice policy” said IT personality Mostafa Jabbar adding the critics have done  a world of good in this respect.
There is also a proposal for forming commission and the government will take necessary step in this regard, he observed.
Shamsul Alam Swapan said, the 12-page policy including different facilities to online news portals as govt. advertisements and accreditation cards to online reporters is a landmark in the history of online journalism as he thanked the prime minister and information minister hoping that online media policy will play a positive role in making digital Bangladesh a success.
All the members involved in the finalization of online media policy will be remembered in the history of online media, Barrister Zakir Ahmed said.
Meanwhile, editors and owners of different online news portals have hailed the committee of online media policy for finalization of the long awaited online media policy.
They thanked IT personality Mostafa Jabbar and BONPA president Shamsul Alam Swapan for engaging their endeavor in making online media policy a reality.
