The operational activities at the much-hyped Payra Sea Port, the third sea port of the country, will begin on Saturday, gearing up the country’s export and import, and goods transportation, UNB reports.  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the sea port, located in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district, through a videoconferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban in the capital.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and acting chairman of the newly-built sea port Captain M Saidur Rahman will be present during the inauguration ceremony. Meanwhile, ‘MV Fortune Bird’, a Chinese commercial ship, has already reached the outer-anchorage of the seaport with some 53 tonnes of stone on board while two ships — one from India and another from Malaysia — are expected to reach the seaport soon.

Through the inauguration, the first goal, out of total three, of bringing clinker, fertiliser and other goods-laden commercial vessels at the outer-anchorage and carry those to other parts of the country through lighterages will be achieved. The two other goals are to construct a container terminal and a bulk terminal by 2018 and develop others facilities in several phases to make the port a complete one by 2023.

The government has already worked out several long- and mid-term plans to start its full-fledged activities. The total activities to develop the port have been divided into 19 components and six of which have been sent to the ministries concerned.

Meanwhile, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a renowned organisation to fulfill a component ‘Main Channel Dredging’.

Once construction of the Payra Port is completed, it will help process fisheries and facilitate export, create more scopes for setting up mills and factories creating employment opportunities for local people, improve the standards of living through extension of utility services, ensure environment-friendly afforestation, land development, embankment, river training as well as increasing international businesses.

Besides, various establishments, including industrial organisations, LNG terminal, coal yard and shipbuilding industry will be developed in the region over the Payra Seaport. The port is also expected to reduce the pressure on the country’s two other sea ports-Chittagong and Mongla-facilitate transit, ensuring economic and social development of the country’s southern and center part.

Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the first-ever newly-built port in the country after its independence on November 19, 2013.
