Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today greeted the countrymen on the eve of the New Year 2017 in English calendar, BSS reports. “The outgoing 2016 was a glorious year in the history of the Bangalee nation . . . let the new year bring in all our lives untainted happiness, peace and prosperity,” she said in a statement greeting the countrymen.
The premier said Bangladesh witnessed glorious success in 2016 in areas of social development, maintaining constitutional and democratic continuation and upholding the spirit of the Liberation War. It was a year of success in both domestic and international arena, she said and referred to her ICT advisor’s winning of ICT for Development Award 2016.
“The electricity generation capacity increased by three times to 15,000 megawatts (MW) and the international organizations recognized that Bangladesh achieved a great success in economic progress,” the premier said. Sheikh Hasina said the global organizations also praised Awami League government for its realistic management in economic sector, adding “we have established good governance in the country”.
She said the country achieved over seven percent growth and the per capita income increased to 1,466 US dollar and the reserves stood at 32 billion of US dollar while the country drew increased foreign and domestic investments.
The export earning has been crossed its target to 34.24 billion US dollar. “Over five crore lower income group people reached middle income group status during the last eight years. We have ensured 100 percent primary enrollment and the literacy rate is now 71 percent,” the Prime Minister said.
She said the government established around 16,500 community clinics and local health service centres across the country aimed at reaching healthcare service to doorsteps.
Capacity of Chittagong and Mongla seaports have been enhanced and operation of newly established Payra seaport is being started, Sheikh Hasina said, adding that construction of metro rail and BRT projects are going on and four lanes on Dhaka-Chittagong and Joydebpur-Mymensingh highways are being constructed.
“We hope motor vehicles would ply on the Padma Bridge in 2018,” she said. The Prime Minister said trials of war crimes are going on defying the conspiracies of BNP-Jamaat as the execution of war trial verdicts were underway. She expressed her determination to bring all war criminals to book and execute the verdicts and establish peace in the country.
“Our government has been working to root out militancy and terrorism following the ‘zero tolerance” policy and we have established people’s democratic rights through the last parliamentary elections,” she said. Sheikh Hasina said that her government also removed the scope for unconstitutional power grabbing to ensure the country to be run by elected representatives.
“Let’s build ‘Golden Bengal’ free from hunger, poverty, illiteracy and communalism as dreamt by the greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” she added.
