Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was given a heartiest welcome when he reached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) here this afternoon to hold talks with Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina,BSS reports.
Sheikh Hasina received the Palestinian leader at the PMO at 3.23 pm by presenting him with a bouquet. Foreign Minister AH Mahmoud Ali, PM’s International Affairs Advisor Dr Gowher Rizvi and PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury were present on the occasion, among others.
Mahmoud Abbas and Sheikh Hasina are now holding a tete-a-tete at the PMO which would be followed by official talks between the two countries. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on formation of a Joint Commission at the foreign ministry level between Bangladesh and Palestine is also expected to be signed after the talks.
The two leaders would witness the inking of the MoU. Later, Mahmoud Abbas will sign the visitors’ book. The Palestinian president arrived here on Wednesday afternoon at the invitation of his Bangladesh counterpart Abdul Hamid.
This is the first official visit of Mahmoud Abbas to Bangladesh. Earlier, he made a brief stopover in Dhaka in February last year on his way to Japan from Jordan.
