Brisk preparations are afoot to observe the National Mourning Day marking the 40th martyrdom anniversary of hero of Bangladesh independence and father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the port city as elsewhere in the district on August 15, agency reports. The authorities of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and district police here have taken extra security measures to avert any untoward incident in observing the National Mourning Day, RAB and CMP sources said.
Nearly 1,600 police personnel and over 400 RAB members will be deployed to check any unpleasant situation on the day, sources said. CMP source said, it will have extra vigilance in an around 87 venues of function on the day apart from setting up 32 check posts at different strategic places in the metropolis. Besides the national programmes, Awami League and its front organizations, educational institutions, different socio-cultural and professional bodies here have chalked out detailed programmes in observance of the martyrdom of the father of the nation and most of his family members on the fateful night of August 15, 1975.
To mark the day Chittagong District Administration will organize various programmes including mourning procession in the morning with the participation of people from all walks of life, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Shilphakala Academy at 10am tomorrow, exhibition of the documentary on the life of Bangabandhu, Milad Mahfil, Khatme Quran, special prayer at Mosques, Temples, Churches and Pagodas and discussion meeting on Bangabandhu on the day.
Essay competition, poetry recitation, discussion meetings are also there in the programmes of the District Administration. City Mayor A Z M Nasir Uddin will attend the discussion meeting to be held at Shilpakala Academy auditorium on the day. Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mezbah Uddin will preside over the discussion meeting. Shishu Academy has arranged essay and cultural competition programme. Islamic Foundation Chittagong has organized Hamd and Nath competition at its auditorium for the students up to class five. Prizes will be distributed later on.
As per official programme, the national flag will be hoisted at half-mast atop all public and private buildings in the city. Joint Secretary of Chittagong city, Awami League advocate Iftaker Saimul Chowdhury told BSS that the party will organize two day-long programme on August 15. The programmes include placing of wreaths on the portrait of Bangabandhu, discussion meeting, Khatme Quran and Doa Mahfils, bringing out mourning processions, hoisting black flags, wearing of black badges, playing of the historic speeches of Bangabandhu and feeding the destitute.
Besides, leaders and workers of AL Chittagong city, south and north district units and its different front organizations will gather at respective party offices in the morning on August 15 and pay homage to the late leader by placing wreaths at his portrait. They will also arrange similar programme in line with central Awami League.
City units of Bangladesh Communist Party, Gono Forum, Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists, Press Information Department, Chittagong, Institution of Engineers, Chittagong centre , Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Islamic Foundation, Jubo league, Civil Surgeon office, Chittagong, Bangabandhu Parisad Chittagong, Sheikh Rasel Smriti Parisad, Greater Chittagong Development Action Council, Projonmo-71 and Shaheed Smriti Pathagar are among the organizations which will arrange separate discussion meetings, Khatme Quran and Doa Mahfil to mark the day on August 15.
Chittagong centres of Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will air special programmes while local dailies will publish special articles focusing the life and contributions of the great leader of the country’s Independence movement.
