THREE migrants drowned yesterday as hundreds tried to wade across a river and enter Macedonia from Greece, according to The Sun. A pregnant woman, her teenage sister and a man were swept away by fast-flowing floods. A Macedonian government spokeswoman said: “It looks like they drowned while trying to enter illegally.”
A rope was strung across the river and a human chain formed. Dads with kids on their shoulders struggled to keep their feet in the torrent. More than 40,000 have been stuck in Greece since ex-Yugoslav countries closed their borders to migrants last week.
A spokeswoman for UN refugee agency UNHCR said the restrictions “have forced people to take desperate actions”.
