Prof Mannan takes over reins of UGC

Professor Abdul Mannan, former Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University, today joined the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh as its 12th chairman, reports agency.
He replaced Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, whose tenure ended today. Professor Mannan joined the Department of Management of Chittagong University in 1973 as a lecturer and served it as its Vice-Chancellor during the period of 1996 to 2001.

He held important posts in different sectors including departmental head, dean of faculty and member of senate, syndicate, Academic Council, Board of Advanced Studies and Finance Committee. He did advanced research on international commerce in Ohio State University in 1989 taking World Bank fellowship.  Professor Mannan was the General Secretary of Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (CUTA) for two consecutive terms, President of CUTA and Secretary General of Federation of University Teachers Association in Bangladesh for one term.

He was a part-time member of UGC. He was also a member of Shamsul Haque Education Commission in the year of 1998-99. He was honored with the Mercantile Bank Gold Medal and UNESCO Award, 2012 for his outstanding contribution in education sector. While, the authority gave a farewell today to outgoing UGC Chairman Professor A K Azad Chowdhury through a function held at the its auditorium. UGC Officers’ Association and UGC Karmachari Union jointly organized the farewell ceremony.

Omar Faruque, president (acting), UGC Officers’ Association, presided over the function.  UGC Members, Professor Dr. Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Professor Dr. Abul Hashem and Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, spoke on the occasion.  Divisional heads, other officers and employees of the UGC and officials of HEQEP (Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project) and BdREN (Bangladesh Research and Education Network) were present on the occasion.
